What is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational therapy is a client-centered profession devoted to empowering people to improve their quality and joy in life by prioritizing independence and function. Pediatric OTs use therapeutic play to help children acquire, restore, and participate in activities of daily living that promote their joy in life.


Common skills OTs might address include:

  • Fine motor skills to build strength and coordination in their hands for tasks such as manipulating clothing fasteners, holding utensils correctly, and handwriting.

  • Functional vision skills such as accurate and coordinated eye movements, focusing, central-peripheral integration, visual perception, and visual-motor.

  • Sensory processing skills and neuroception

  • Primitive and postural reflex maturation

  • Motor planning and coordination skills





Red Flags

  • Clumsiness/ poor coordination/ trips and falls frequently

  • Bumps into objects and people

  • Skips lines or words when reading or copying text

  • Seems to be in constant motion

  • Muscle weakness or fatigue

  • Difficulty manipulating small objects

  • Has unreasonable fears or anxiety

  • Fearful of movement such as swinging, climbing playground equipment, or being lifted in the air


  • Difficulty sustaining attention

  • Messy or illegible handwriting

  • Motion or car sickness

  • Feeding difficulties

  • Difficulty tolerating changes in routine or transitioning between activities

  • Delayed acquisition of motor milestones

  • Difficulty tolerating or avoids certain textures, smells, tastes, sounds, or movements

What can you expect?

Our OT will provide a comprehensive evaluation, customized treatment plan constructed in collaboration with family members, one-on-one treatment sessions, home exercise programs, recommendations for home and school when appropriate, and continual guidance and support as needed.

Currently, Vision-n-Motion Occupational Therapy, LLC is in-network with SD Medicaid, BCBS, Avera, Dakotacare, First Choice, and Sanford. Affordable private pay rates and out-of-network billing are options as well.
